What is a Social Innovation Summit Learning Journey?
Learning Journeys are an immersive, day-and-a-half experience to explore a specific social impact issue through the lens of a city for an invitation-only delegation of 40-50 leaders from across the country.
We partner with city/program hosts to design a journey that is comprised of about 10 stops throughout the city, which typically include a combination of meet-and-greets with city mayors and local leaders, company and field site visits, social events, and local experiences.
Most of the delegation joins from out-of-town, and among the many objectives we hope that delegates will learn lessons along the journey that they can bring back to their communities.

In an economy in which easy-to-access digital tools and information are the starting point, equitable access to digital tools and resources for all communities is paramount. If we are to foster an economy that leaves no one behind, investing in people and places, we must ensure equal access to resources and opportunities across technology and digital tools, education and training, investment and employment, and more.
On November 15-16, Social Innovation Summit and Comcast NBCUniversal will convene leading executives, investors, and thought leaders for a two-day Learning Journey focused on Advancing Economic Mobility. Through a series of interactive site visits, headquarter tours, and unique experiences, our national delegation will take an insider’s look at how digital equity can open doors for the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs, helping more communities achieve economic prosperity and social mobility.

VISIT #1
"Meet the Delegation" | Lunch & Networking
As our delegation arrives in the Bay Area, join us for an introductory meet-and-greet and lunch conveniently located at the hotel where you will have the opportunity to meet with your fellow delegates as we get the journey started. We encourage you to book your flight to ensure you are able to join the opening lunch. No problem if your flight lands a bit later – please just let us know so we can arrange for you to join the group whenever you arrive!
VISIT #2
"Local Infrastructure with Global Impact" | Panel Remarks
To begin our Learning Journey, delegates will visit the Port of Oakland first - a major economic engine for the region with an enormous impact on the local community. Here, leaders will join to share how the port is taking steps to help relieve the global supply chain, and actions the port is taking to build social equity and power economic vitality for diverse stakeholders.

"Building Skills & Driving Diversity in Tech" | Panel Remarks & Delegate Reflection
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Black men have the highest unemployment rate of any race or gender group. They are underrepresented in the technology industry — where there are many unfilled jobs. On our next visit, we'll visit The Hidden Genius Project, who will speak to their work training and mentoring Black male youth in technology creation, entrepreneurship, and leadership skills to transform their lives and communities.

"Brewing Change" | Tour & Tasting
Next up, the delegation will visit Oakland’s only Black-owned brewery, Hella Coastal. There are over 9,000 breweries in the United States and less than 1% are Black-owned. Here, delegates will meet with the team to learn how they are focused on changing the narrative in all aspects of brewing.

VISIT #6
"Addressing Inequality in Education" | Breakfast & Delegate Conversations
To start Day 2 of our journey together, delegates will visit the Kapor Center to tour the state-of-the-art convening space for the region's tech and social justice communities, and learn more about the various programs which are addressing the root causes of inequality in STEM. Following light breakfast, delegates will be joined by local experts for themed roundtable conversations, where they'll have the opportunity to dive deep into social issues among peers.

"Unlocking Opportunities for Economic Prosperity" | Tour & Special Remarks
Next up, we’ll visit Block, Inc. (formerly Square) to explore the role and impact that technology and community spaces have in unlocking opportunities for economic prosperity. Here, the Block, Inc. team will share how they have helped to democratize access to the economy, and highlight the programs and initiatives in place to support the community of Oakland.

"Black Political & Economic Power" | Panel Remarks & Delegate Reflection
For our lunch-time stop, delegates will visit the Oakland Museum of California where we will have lunch and meet special in-person guests who have built Black social movements.

"The Chinese Story in Oakland" | Special Treat & Neighborhood Tour
One of the oldest Chinatowns in the United States, Oakland Chinatown was settled in the 1850s, shortly after the gold rush. In 1906, the San Francisco earthquake and fire caused thousands of Chinese survivors to move to Oakland to rebuild their lives in the East Bay. We will first visit the Oakland Asian Cultural Center before departing on a walking tour of Oakland Chinatwon to hear more about the Oakland experience of Asian immigrants and visit the oldest Fortune Cookie maker in the San Francisco Bay Area, one of the very last places that still make all fortune cookies entirely by hand.

"The Future of Gaming & Technology" | Tour & Capstone
For our final visit of our journey together, delegates will visit the Gameheads' newly launched Video Game Center -- a state of the art video game design, development, DevOps and mixed media space. Here, delegates will receive a behind the scenes tour, and learn how the Gameheads Center is becoming a beacon for diversity and inclusion in the gaming space . Following the tour, we'll engage in our Capstone Conversation and reflect upon our time on the journey together.

"Special Closing Reception" | Cocktails & Networking
Our closing reception will bring together delegates and local leaders to network over drinks, food, and a fun final farewell to the Oakland Bay Area!

To take full advantage of the experience, we recommend arriving on the morning of November 15th and departing the morning of November 17th.
We have arranged a discounted room block and recommend the group stay there for ease of logistics and transportation. For access to our discounted hotel block, please contact Andrew at: akalaigian@landmarkventures.com
Due to the generosity of our partners, there is no fee to participate! Delegates are responsible for their own travel and hotel, but all activities in Oakland are included (meals, VIP receptions, and luxury bus transportation).
Once confirmed, we will follow up with a delegate information form with additional details to prepare for your amazing Oakland experience.
